| Fortunately, the term "under glass" means a lot at Stonecrop--the Pit House where the Nerines and Narcissus are blooming, the Alpine House where the Saxifragas are just beginning, and the main Conservatory with its varied collection. We will watch all of these areas as the Winter progresses. |
The diminutive Nerine humilis was a mass of blooms and our second Nerine sighting of the season--the first was at Wave Hill on October 25.
| Where did all those flowers on the left come from? Looking down a bit, we see that a lot of them are from the 10 bulbs happily crammed together in this single pot! | ||||
There were several pots of the early blooming Naracissus cantabricus ssp monophyllus with its white flowers and grass-like leaves in the Pit House.
| Saxifraga 'Ben Fuji'--a most unusual Saxifraga with each flower having 2 long and 3 short petals. What will they think of next? | ||||
Saxifraga x 'Paulinae Kolbiana'--one of the earliest bloomers of the extensive collection of diminutive Saxifragas
| It is not easy maintaining this collection of Alpines in this climate. The Alpine House is chilled in the summer with cold water recirculated in pipes in the growing benches. | ||||
Salvia chamaedryoides--also known as Germander Sage--this gray leaved blue flowering Salvia is native to the hill country of Texas and central Mexico and being hardy in only zones 8-10 is grown in a small warm greenhouse off the back of the potting shed.
| This rather large Tibouchina urvilleana is beautiful in bloom and sheds its petals all over its neighbors below giving the whole area a purple cast. | ||||
This Daphne odorata 'Aureomarginata' with its leaves edged in a white band of varying width is about to bloom in the Conservatory.
| Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Variegatus' is another Conservatory resident with variegated foliage--but its leaves are a bit more mottled than the Daphne on the left. | ||||
Thick waxy variegated foliage and Ligularia-like flowers of Farfugium japonicum 'Argenteum' in the Conservatory.
| Velthemia bracteata--also known as Velthemia undulata--just look at the leaves! There is a whole display of these bulbous plants native to South Africa in the Conservatory. We will show them again as soon as they bloom. |
