Editor's Journal: Stonecrop

Outdoors, a Hosta which had very white flowers now has clusters of very black seeds; the leaves may have fallen from the Disanthus, but the tiny flowers continue to sparkle; and the Oak leaved Hydrangeas are showing their autumn colors. In the Pit House, two bulbs and two very different Saxifragas are blooming.

In the foreground the silvery plumes of Miscanthus sinensis glow in the afternoon sun while in the background the grove of Metasequoia glyptostroboides takes on its autumn color as its foliage begins to fall.
Miscanthus and Metasequoia Grove
Hosta sieboldiana
The flowers of summer, as white as freshly fallen snow, have become clusters of seeds, as black as coal in the night.
The branches of this shrub have lost their wonderfully colored fall foliage but are still covered with the tiny red flowers which look like back to back spiders.
Disanthus cercidifolius
Hydrangea quercifolia
And the many plants of the Oak Leaf Hydrangea are showing their fall colors.
Moving to the Pit House, more bulbs are blooming including this Narcissus from southern Spain with pure white hoop-petticoats.
Narcissus cantabricus
Hyacinthus corymbosus
A tiny Alpine-sized Hyacinth collected in South Africa is just starting to bloom.
The brilliantly colored Saxifraga 'Ben Fuji' is in full bloom with each flower having three short and two long petals.
