It is nearly autumn in the Flower Garden with lots of great colors watched over by a well stuffed Gertrude Jekyll--someone has to keep all the color combinations straight! And miraculously it is spring again in the geometric vegetable beds--where at Stonecrop one planting is not enough. When I expressed my surprise at seeing the vegetable beds being returned to their springtime splendor, one of the horticultural students simply replied with "Of course!" I guess it just depends on your standards, and at Stonecrop they are pretty high.

A very tall Abutilon--over seven feet tall--puts on a generous display against the blue sky.

Clematis, Abutilon, and Salvia
In front of the Abutilon we have the red Salvia 'Van-Houttei' and on the wall the late blooming Clematis maximowicziana.
Tibouchina urvilleana--not surprisingly known as the Glory bush--is even more exotic paired with the dark leaved Canna. Compare with Tibouchina multiflora seen at Wisley.

A Perfectly Matched Trio
The Aster novae-angliae 'Treasure' on the left, Tibouchina in the center, and the Buddleja on the right are perfectly matched in color. Add in the dark leaved Canna and I'm impressed--wow!

The Purple Trio Plus Yellow
Moving back a bit from the above shot, a yellow Rudbeckia triloba joins the purple trio.

Purple Asters and Orange Tubular Flowers
Wildly orange tubular flowers of Cuphea 'David Verity' intermixed with purple Aster novae-angliae 'Treasure.'
The Ageratum 'Blue Horizon' has a silvery friend, Artemisia absinthium 'Huntingdon.' The genus Ageratum derives its name from "a" meaning not and "geras" meaning old because the flowers keep their color for a long time.

Justicia carnea
Just one of the many flower clusters of the Justicia carnea about to be covered with blooms like that shown on July 5.
A well stuffed Gertrude Jekyll watches over the carefully orchestrated beds of the Flower Garden to make sure the colors are just right. Behind her is the Rainbow series of beds.

Salvia 'Purple Majesty'
A royal purple Salvia with the logical name of 'Purple Majesty.'
The wonderfully geometric patterned vegetable beds of spring which, of course, became overgrown in the summer, have been replanted to once again return to their springtime splendor.

At Stonecrop one session of springtime vegetables is not enough!
