Editor's Journal: Stonecrop

A mostly sunny day with the temperature pleasantly only in the 70s. The Flower Garden--and all of Stonecrop--is in its late summer glory just in time for the annual garden party tomorrow. This page features several Salvias--including burgundy colored S. 'Van-Houttei' perfectly matched with a Sweet Pea of exactly the same color. Continue.

Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit plants indicated by AGM.

Abutilon pictum 'Thompsonii' with green and yellow leaves and Rudbeckia nitida blooming with yellow flowers in front of the white flowering Clematis terniflora which has just come into bloom in the past week.
Abutilon, Rudbeckia nitida and Clematis
Clematis maximowicziana
The Sweet Autumn Clematis is laden with a countless number of extraordinarily fragrant tiny white stars.
The purplish cast to the flower stalks of the Calamagrostis epigejos echoes the deeper color of the Canna leaves--and their soft delicate feathery texture is the perfect contrast to the large smooth Canna leaves.
Calamagrostis epigejos and Canna
Phytolacca esculenta
The berries on the Chinese Pokeweed are turning a rich purplish black. A member of its own family-- Phytolaccaceae.
What's happening in this photo is amazing--the deep red Sweet Pea is such a perfect color match with Salvia 'Van-Houttei' (AGM) it is hard to tell them apart in this photo.
Salvia 'Van-Houttei' and Lathyrus 'Kenneth'
Salvia 'Van-Houttei'
Amazingly decorative with graceful stalks of deep red bracts and long tubular flowers in the same color.
So many Salvias on our planet--the RHS Plant Finder lists hundreds--and so many at Stonecrop--with more to bloom later. The name of this cultivar says it all.
Salvia 'Purple Majesty'
Salvia miniata 'Scarlet'
One of the wonderfully fuzzy Salvias--in brilliant scarlet.
A tender perennial with orange tubular flowers and velvety grey green leaves--known as Kings Crown or the Hummingbird Plant. Native to Uruguay and a member of the Acanthaceae family.
'Dicliptera suberecta'
Fuchsia 'Karelle'
One of several popular cultivars of Fuchsia at Stonecrop--this cultivar, grown in tubs, has long skinny pale salmon flowers in terminal racemes--typical of F. triphylla hybrids. Other favorites at Stonecrop, grown in the beds, include 'Mrs. Popple' and 'Honeysuckle.'
The delicate fluffy Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens is a great contrast to the large leaved Brillantaisia subulugarica which we hope will bloom--because although it is a great foliage plant, we would like to find out what its flowers look like!
Brillantaisia and Miscanthus
Plectranthus zuluensis
Seen blooming in the Conservatory on June 14, this Plectranthus is now spreading and blooming quite profusely in the shade of the Skinny Vista
Thriving in the moist shade, Strobilanthes maculatus with deep green leaves with brush marks of white looks great with Coleus 'Chartreuse Sparkler' with its bright yellowish green leaves marked with creamy yellow veins.
Strobilanthes and Coleus
Begonia parviflora
And another great foliage plant for moist shade, Begonia parviflora with huge dark green leaves.
