GardenWeek Virtual Visits September 7, 1999

Editor's Journal

We spend a lot of time showing the structure and the layouts of the gardens we visit--the walls, the steps, the levels, the topographical and water features and so forth. And we show a lot of photos of particularly interesting combinations of plants--interesting combinations of colors and / or textures. We walked up the Broad Walk and Battleston Hill and then The Portsmouth Field came into view--with its various trials and its amazing rectangle of Dahlias. Just Dahlias. Maybe 4 or 5 plants of 125 different varieties all lined up in rows. And in perfect condition thanks to the care of Mr. England--Yes, here in England, Jim England was tending the Dahlias. It had been quite dry here in July, but the four inches or so of rain that arrived in August apparently did wonders. No complex structure or painstakingly thought out combination of plants--just a spectacular bed of Dahlias. Do not miss it! And I should add that although many of the trials go on for a few years and then are replaced with other trials, the Dahlias are part of a permanent trial--so they get better every year.

Although many trials were going on, clearly the Dahlias were the highlight of Portsmouth Field for me. Try this photo larger.

Backing up and rotating our view a bit, some of the reds and purples move in behind the yellow and white dazzler.
Mostly purples and reds in this photo. Many of the name tags were inward facing and inaccessible to me--you will just have to visit yourself.

Mostly lavender and pale colored Dahlias from this spot.
A unique pale lavender. This page may have our shortest descriptions ever--the photos sepak for themselves.

The trials of Heleniums and Helianthuses were their own spectacular bed. And right across from the Rhubarb trials--this is England!
