Two very fragrant shrubs, the Bamboo Grove, a Palm-like perennial, an interesting combination of whites, and the edge of the pond wrap up this report.

Clerodendrum trichotomum. This fragrant shrub, native to Japan, is generally thought not be be hardy in this area, yet it is thriving just south of the Wisteria Pavilion. Unlike the Gunnera, it is not the recipient of special winter protection--so it must be in a sheltered spot.

Clerodendrum trichotomum
The genus is from the word "kleros" meaning chance and "dendron" meaning tree--referring to its alleged variable medicinal qualities. Seems a bit of a stretch to me--but I am willing to repeat the legend!
Small white flowers of Astrantia major seen in front of a variegated Hosta.

From a bit further back, we get a better shot of the Astrantia major.
A fragrant Clethra barbinervis. Unlike Clethra alnifolia--the Sweet Pepper Bush which is native to Eastern North America--this species is native to China.

Clethra and Ligularia
The same Clethra barbinervis with Ligularia stenocephala in the background.
A particularly golden Hemerocallis at the base of the Cliff Garden.

The Bamboo Grove
I just discovered the Bamboo Grove with a lower growing Variegated Bamboo--Sasaella masamuneana 'Albostriata' --in the front and a taller green leaved Bamboo--Phyllostachys aureosulcata--in the back.
Palm-like leaves of Helleborus foetidus in the Woodland. Another species of the Christmas Rose with rather striking foliage.

The Edge of the Pond
Green and yellow leaves of Acorus calamus 'Argenteostriatus' by the edge of the pond in back of a white Water Lily, Nymphaea 'Joey Tomocik.'
