| The Gunneras in the Woodlands to the south of the Conservatory seem to be responding to the "royal treatment." On May 31 we saw how they are boxed for the winter, and now they are ringed with manure and have a dedicated water pipe with a slow constant water drip--nothing but the best for these residents! And what I find most interesting about this area is that although it is quite large--it basically consists of large masses of just four plants--the huge leaves of Petasites japonicus var. giganteus, the Gunnera manicata with its even bigger leaves, and between the two the tall spires of Ligularia stenocephala seen just starting to bloom on July 5, and Ligularia dentata with its darker yellow flowers in shorter umbels just about at their peak now. This very large scale contrasts well with the smaller scale of the Flower Garden, and the minute scale of the Alpines which we look forward to covering next winter and spring. Continue. |
