Editor's Journal: Stonecrop

A treasured Styrax, an "almost Styrax," a beauty of a Beauty Bush, and, since every garden needs a "Secret Garden" we present the "Bramble Ramble." It took me a year of photographing Stonecrop before I found the Bramble Ramble--and I only found it because I was pointed to it! So do try to get pointed to it on your next visit. On the western side of the property, it has a wonderful collection of "simple" Roses--and even a plant that looks most definitely like a Rose--but isn't!

Click any image to see it larger, then close that window to continue.

Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit plants indicated by AGM.

You can even see this tree, in front of a Corylus avellana 'Purpurea' with its dark leaves, from the parking lot. The Styrax (AGM) is a member of the Styracaceae family from Japan and the Corylus--a Hazel Nut tree--is a member of the Corylaceae family.

Styrax obassia
Styrax obassia
Long drooping clusters of fragrant waxy white flowers with bright yellow stamens--and the leaves on this Fragrant Snowbell will be quite large, growing to eight or more inches. Not surprisingly, at the apparently higher zoned Wave Hill, this tree was in full bloom nearly two weeks ago!
From a distance, this western Chinese native and member of the Carpifoliaceae family on the Himalayan Slope looks like just another pink Weigelia. . . .
Kolkwitzia amabilis
Pterostyrax corymbosa
Also blooming this week, an "almost Styrax" at the bottom of Gus' Slope--the short clusters of flowers look like fluff. We will also look for P. hispida--the Epaulette Tree--to bloom soon with its longer clusters of flowers in Woodland Garden.
But get a little closer, and the difference is amazing. The pink buds open to very pale, almost white, flowers with an amazing pattern of pale orange in the throat. Known as the Beauty Bush and named after R. Kolkwitz, a professor of botany in Berlin.

Rosa pendulina
Starting off in the "Secret Garden" known as the "Bramble Ramble."

Rosa rugosa 'Agnes'
Rosa 'Fru Dagmar Hastrup'
Another Rose in the Bramble Ramble.

Rosa 'Henry Hudson'
Rosa x alba 'Alba Semiplena'
Another Rose in the Bramble Ramble.

"A Rose is a Rose is a Rose"--but although a member of the Rosaceae family, this is NOT a Rose--it's a Potentilla.
Potentilla fruticosa
Rubus 'Benenden'
And continuing with the Rose look-alikes--this is NOT a Rose either--it's a Rubus! Note the wonderful pink remains on the flowers that have lost their petals.

Back to the Roses, this pink climber is in the Flower Garden.
Rosa nutkana
Pebbles
And here at Stonecrop, where the Daffodils are known as "Dafs," the Fritillarias are "Frits," and the Conservatory is the "Con," I'm Pebbles, known as "Pebs."
